Catalan translation questions #60

Open TheRabbitter opened 8 years ago

TheRabbitter commented 8 years ago

During my translation work I found some strings of which I needed more information to get them right. As requested by Noitidart I will post them here so that the conclusions could help other people.

success_search/system_hotkey_desc2

Focus Tab/Firefox does not need focus

Focus in Catalan/Spanish can be translated with completely different words as either to sharpen/make clear a photograpy or to "set focus", that is, to place some process/object on top. I guess the last meaning is what the application does, but I have not found where it is on the addon. I would like to know what is exactly the meaning behind "Firefox does not need focus". Is it that in some process Firefox runs in the background and there is some way of setting focus to it (although I don't think so, as this sentence suggests the opposite)? The same applies to "Focus tab".

reason1_trash

Something went wrong in platform trash procedure

I do not understand the "platform trash procedure" part. Is there a platform which peforms the process of deleting content? Could you please tell me another way of saying the same so it is easier for me to get it right?

all_monitors

All Monitors

Regarding "All Monitors", I would like some context too. Is it about monitors as "computer display/screen" or as "to observe/to track some information/to supervise"?

shrink_handles/enlarge_handles

Shrink Handles/Enlarge Handles

And finally the "handles". They are translated as "mangos/asas" in Spanish or "mànecs/nanses" in Catalan, but I haven't heard of this words in a computer environment; they do not sound natural. I guess it may refer to those double arrows used to shrink or enlarge windows. Is that correct? I have not seen this string in the addon and I don't think that I should literally translate them. As far as I am concerned, a "mango/asa-mànec/nansa" always refer to what is shown in the following image: http://www.ikea.com/...PE081825_S4.JPG.

I will post my conclusions on each string after Noitidart's clarifications so we can discuss if they are right and to be of help for others.

Thank you @TheRabbitter!

I'll then copy paste my answer from here to the there. So it can help out others too. [:)]

I really want to thank you for spending so much time and detail on this!

"Focus Tab" is shown as a button in a toolbar - http://i.imgur.com/fWpdz7m.png - after a user does a "Reverse Image Search". Clicking it will switch the tab to the one which contains the results. So this would be "set focus" please.

The "Firefox does not need focus" is for a system hotkey. On Windows and Linux the default is "Pirnt Screen" and on Mac it is "Cmd + 3". What I mean by this is that, usually with hotkeys in Firefox, you have to have Firefox as your front and active application. However with this system hotkey method this is not the case. Any application be be front. As long as FIrefox is opened the hotkey will work from anywhere.

For the trash procedure this is where it happens - http://i.imgur.com/IksyZ2h.png - after that button is clicked it will start doing what it takes to send the image to the recyle bin. On the computer this is a fodler on the desktop or "dock" in mac. But it also applies to some cloud services like Dropbox. Errors happen if server is down or if something went wrong in my code. Another way to say it would be "Sending the file to the recycle bin failed". Items from the "trash" are recoverable, as they can go to the trash folder and click "restore file".

For "All Monitors" this means "Select all monitors". If you have one monitor this is the same as "Select fullscreen". However I have two monitors, so if I say "Select fullscreen" it will select the screen of the current monitor. But if you want fullscreen to be all the monitors combined, this is "All monitors".

By "handles" i mean the resize points. So when you try to resize an image you have on the corners these "grabbable points". Once you mouse down and hold, if you move your mouse it resizes the image. That is what i mean by handles. Its funny to think they are "Mangos" in English hahaha! So shrinking and enlarging them. Here are big handles - http://i.imgur.com/t3meN1F.png and here are small handles - http://i.imgur.com/dz6eM8R.png - so shrink and enlarge just means changing the size of these.

I have finally decided that those would be the best options I could come up with. I include the translation to English for each one, so that anyone can draw their conclusions.

system_hotkey_desc2

Focus Tab

I translated this as "Obrir la pestanya en primer pla", which could be translated as "Open tab and put it on top". I haven't found a shorter way to say that while preserving its meaning. The problem is that this may be too long to fit the button's width.

success_search

Firefox does not need focus

Again, we don't have a nice word like focus with a wide meaning like in English. I would translate it as "Firefox no necessita trobar-se en primer pla perquè la drecera funcioni". This could be translated as "Firefox does not need to be on top so that the hotkey works". As you see, I have added the hotkey part to clarify the context. If you think that should be omitted, I will leave as "Firefox does not need to be on top" - "Firefox no necessita trobar-se en primer pla".

reason1_trash

Something went wrong in platform trash procedure

I have finally translated this based on your alternative sentence, which is "Sending the file to the recycle bin failed". In catalan that reads "Ha fallat l'enviament de l'arxiu a la paperera de reciclatge".

all_monitors

All Monitors

This one is easy once you know the context. I have translated it literally as "Tots els monitors", which is "All monitors".

shrink_handles/enlarge_handles

Shrink Handles/Enlarge Handles

Now that I know what were you referring to, I searched on the web how others translate it as I was sure that the literal translation would not work. I found a website where they called them "Controladores de tamaño" - "Size controllers", which makes perfect sense to me and sounds natural.

Edit: I missunderstood your answer. Now I see the strings tell the user to set the size of the handles. I finally translated them as "Reduir el controlador de mida"/"Augmentar el controlador de mida", that is, "Reduce controller's size"/"Increase controller's size". Again, that is maybe too long to fit in its place, so we may have to find another way to call it.

Noitidart commented 8 years ago

Shorter the better applies everywhere, because people like to read as little as possible hahaha. I even have to revisit the English to make it shorter.

Graphically here is the ratings I would give it on length:

Focus Tab / success_search

Length of the string is ok here, we can afford long ones,. It would be ideal if we can make it shorter, because if user did multiple actions they'll have multiple buttons, so at this point they will probably run out of room. But only an issue when multi actions are done, this is only done by power users.

Firefox does not need focus

The shorter the better in this case, because it goes on the GUI of the options page. I like "Firefox no necessita trobar-se en primer pla" if you're ok with it.

reason1_trash

This is perfect. Length is no issue here at all.

shrink_handles/enlarge_handles

Length is somewhat issue here but not so much. As users can move the toolbar around and see more. So no problem if it can't get shorter. :)

TheRabbitter commented 8 years ago

I understand that shorter is better. I will change the "Focus Tab" to be "Pestanya en primer pla", removing the "Obrir" ("Open"), as it is somewhat implicit, just as is in English. The result is still correct and anyone can understand its meaning.

I will also change the "Firefox does not teed focus" for "Firefox no necessita trobar-se en primer pla".
