Bring README.md up to date and correct inaccuracies.

Also added a .gitignore file to ease working with the main branch in a clone.

fixes #82

I added links to some other documents using the markdown link syntax. This looks nicer on GitHub but might be harder to read in a clone on a terminal. Is this modification a good idea (and maybe extended to other links in the document) or should I remove them?
