Prok drum module #13

Open MickGlossop opened 5 years ago

MickGlossop commented 5 years ago

Hi - I have Prok BD, SN & HH. Up until a few days ago. I was successfully using the Prok Drum Editor (Mac) software to edit and save drum sounds.

However, whilst editing my BD sounds, the editor locked up and I can't get past the intro page (which displays my 3 drum modules) and into the editor. If I disconnect the BD module, all is OK and I can edit sounds on the SN & HH modules.

If I swap the rear PCBs, the problem still stays with the BD module. Does this perhaps mean that the Teensy software has become corrupted?

Can I reset the Teensy?

Grateful for any help, please.

Mick

Hi Mick,

If the module works ok it's unlikely the software got corrupted, it would just stop working altogether I think.

The developer is currently on holiday in Iceland so might take a few days to get a response on this.

Oh unless I misunderstood and the BD doesn't work even when disconnected from USB?

Hi Steve,

Thanks for getting back so quickly.

I’m pretty sure that the BD module generates sound and its own controls work OK, but I’ll check and let you know.

Cheers, Mick

Yes - as I thought, the BD module itself works OK. It’s just that the editor software freezes when it tries to access the module for editing.

Do you have an SD card in the BD module with edited patches on?

If you do, can you try the editor without the SD card and tell me if it still has the same problem.

If it doesn't then i'll have to think some more.

MickGlossop commented 5 years ago

Hi Martin,

Thanks for getting back to me.

The problem occurs with or without an SD card inserted into the BD module.

Cheers, Mick

Hi,

Thanks for that. I presume you mean that you’re offering to replace the Teensy, not the whole module?

I’ve attached a photo of mine.

What address should I use to send it to you?

I’m not bothered about the postage cost, but thanks anyway.

Hi Steve,

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but even with the new Teensy installed the BD module still causes the Prok Editor to lock up.

The editor works fine with only the SN & HH modules connected. I’ve tried connecting the BD module directly to my MacPro’s front panel USB port, instead of via the USB hub, (and disconnecting the SN & HH modules) but it still refuses to talk to the Editor.

I guess there must be something awry with the module?

Are there any tests/voltage checks I can perform?

Cheers, Mick

Thonk-Steve commented 5 years ago

Hi Mick,

Ah ok that's interesting, I would suggest you start trying different combination of front pcb, back pcb and teensy to whittle it down.

Does the new BD teensy work ok on say the HH module?

The BD module woks fine using both the back board and Teensy from the SN module.

I swapped the 2 IC's (one at a time) between the SN and BD modules, and it made no difference, so they're OK.

So something is amiss with the BD back board.

I tried the BD Teensy (the new one) in the SN module and it exhibited the same problem as the BD module. This would indicate a problem with the new Teensy, but I'd have thought that it's very unlikely that 2 Teensys would be faulty.

Is it possible that a problem in the BD back board is damaging the Teensy?

To clarify the symptoms.... All 3 modules function OK regarding sound generation, triggering and manual editing. The BD problem only occurs when trying to use the Editor to change BD sound parameters. When I have all 3 modules connected via USB, the Editor works fine, displays all 3 modules on the intro screen, and I can swap between editing the SN and the HH modules, The problem only occurs when I click on the Editor's image of the BD's front panel in order to start editing its parameters. That's when the Editor freezes up. If I then use the file menu to quit the Editor (a keybd CMD-Q doesn't work) and then re-open the Editor, I can carry on editing the SN and HH.

Cheers, Mick

Hi Mick,

Ok a couple of things to check, see if you're getting a reliable 5v out of the SMD regulator. Then use continuity testing to make sure the connections between the boards are all ok and none of them are shorted together.

Hi Mick,

If you put the teensy into the back board are you seeing good continuity between the pins on the top of the teensy and the pins on the other side of the back PCB?

Hi Steve,

Yes - it’s good on all the pins.

Hi Mick,

If you put the teensy into the back board are you seeing good continuity between the pins on the top of the teensy and the pins on the other side of the back PCB?

Hi Steve,

I’m getting a steady 4.97v from the regulator.

The connections between the boards all seem OK too.

I’ll a couple of photos to your Thonk email address.

Hi Mick,

Ok a couple of things to check, see if you're getting a reliable 5v out of the SMD regulator. Then use continuity testing to make sure the connections between the boards are all ok and none of them are shorted together.
