I think there is value in using something that removes the need to write HTML from creating the website. A lot of the content can be pulled in from social media and meetup.com but some of the simple informational details aren't going to look good that way.
Using the built in Jekyll static generator is probably the best option although there are workflows (e.g. using the *.github.io repo as a submodule of another repo) that will work with any of:
