Games Themed Event #38

I don't have anything concrete right now, but I have the following people I can get in touch with:

That's all I can think of, off the top of my head right now, but I'm sure that I know a couple of other people we could bring in.

With the three I mentioned, Yuri and Chris would be a stretch as they're both not in the UK. Rich is in Newcastle and he's already said that he's up for it, he's happy to work around the other guys' schedule. It would be pretty cool if we could get all three of them down, as we all went to Sheffield uni together :P

We will have to source (UK) travel and accommodation for them, though.

I'm still working on getting my brother, Kevin, on board, he's an indie games dev, releasing both PC/console games (Kaiju Panic) and VR games (Neuralgia VR, Pierhead Arcade, Chicken Walk).

Some tangentially related people I could potentially get in touch with:

There's a gambling machine company in Parc Menai, maybe one of their guys could give a talk... it's sort of games-related, right?

I have contacts at: Occulus Ville Games who make CSR2 (now owned by Zynga), he used to work for Lionhead Zynga who was also Chair at http://www.igda.org/ until this year. One of the core developers for Flightgear. Llyr from Computer Science will have many many contacts.

Doug who's local has said he can talk about Unity.

I'd REALLY like to do a workshop at some point using https://love2d.org/

Oooh! Sounds like this event could potentially have a pretty strong lineup.

(Travel and accommodation will also get racked up pretty rapidly, though.)

I don't have any experience with Lua, but I'm sold on the support cute whale! :p

Speaking of workshops, you could potentially include a scratch workshop if you want to extend the event to incorporate family friendly stuff.

So a little update on where I'm up to with persuading these guys to give a talk:

I recently attended the UK Games Expo (about tabletop games, war games and rpgs) and there was a seminar that sounded very interesting, "Hybrid Games – The Magic of Combining Traditional Gameplay with Electronic Elements". This was given by Reiner Knizia, who is just about the most famous & prolific games designer, but maybe we could find someone local to do a talk on hybrid games? (We actually do have a local famous-ish board game designer in Snowdonia, but he's not keen on adding electronic bits to his board games.)

Maybe we could bring Mr Allen Heard back to do a talk focused on "Teaching with games"?...

Which actually reminds me of the behaviour change thing with games at the uni. Games Jams, boardgames sessions and design are increasingly used in universities around the UK to help the next generation of games developers explore gaming. So, an additional talk about how games help us learn, and what academics are getting up to in various universities around the country would be great. (So maybe someone from the Psychology dept. or the Media dept. of the uni?)

Creative North Wales have an event coming up that lines up with this idea:

Powering Up the Video Games Industry - Wed, 21 April 2021 @ 14:00 – 15:30 BST

They have a strong lineup:

I'll be participating in this event immediately after this event too: Copyright Licensing and ICT

I've also agreed to run a games workshop the same day as this event later in the evening. Will add details here later.
