Unrecognized app - Windows protected your PC #53

  1. After downloading the file PrISM-0.1.0.msi and clicking on it I received a warning:

    Windows Defender Smartscreen prevented an unrecognized app from starting. Running this app might put your PC at risk. App: PrISM-0.1.0.msi Publisher: Unknown

I can just bypass the warning with the Run Anyway button, as I trust the developers, however, for a public release the app should eventually be a known publisher.

It looks like the concerns are:

  1. Finding a trusted authentic organization(business or nonprofit) with register-able credentials like a business license, mailing address, phone number etc.

  2. Convincing that organization that the PrISM app is trustworthy enough for the organization to warrant the trust of a code signing company.

  3. Finding a payor to finance the payment of the code signing certificate.
