Once the app is installed and running on the target machine there is no way to be sure which version is running. Test result reports may be less than clear.
For example, after downloading PrISM-0.1.2-rc.msi it is placed next to PrISM-0.1.0.msi in the directory. Clicking on the 0.1.2 installer does something, however it is not clear if it uninstalled the previous version first. The installer places a shortcut icon on the desktop and an icon in the installed programs popup Windows menu. IF I had manually uninstalled the previous version first would eliminate my confusion, but of course that is not what I did!
Therefore the request for something in the app that clearly identifies the version.
For example, some applications put this information in the Help -> About pop up modal.
