Hi! I love the site and find it really useful. I would love to see a little
BBQ icon. Perhaps a Pig, but that might anger the Texans.

Have a suggestion for new icons ?

Hi Erin,

Check this one out, we've used this as a BBQ marker on several maps.

Hi Matthias,

Thanks for following up. I saw the icon you're using for BBQ. The problem is
that that icon (a grill) doesn't mean BBQ to most Americans. It means "to
grill" in my opinion, or even represents a park or campground where grilling
occurs. For example, for a seafood restaurant I would use a fish symbol, not a
person fishing. BBQ is analogous. Either way, I love what you and your team are
doing. Keep up the good work!

Hi Erin,

Thanks for the feedback!

OK, interesting, didn't know that. What I normally do is Google the word, like
BBQ, and try to find the most common picture or symbol that describes the
place/event/etc. When you try it you will see why I choose a grill to describe
BBQ. Please describe for what you want to use the "BBQ" icon and maybe I can
find a suitable symbol?

Regards,

Matthias

Hi Matthias,
:)

If you check this Wikipedia it kind of explains the relationship/confusion
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barbecue#Etymology

The term as a noun can refer to the meat, the cooking apparatus itself
(the "barbecue grill"] or to a party that includes such food. The term
as an adjective can refer to foods cooked by this method. The term is
also used as a verb for the act of cooking food in this manner.

By far the most evocative single image for me is the side silhouette
of a pig, like this http://www.sudirect.com/imagesFarm/Pig_s.jpg
Many BBQ places in my area advertise what they sell using this symbol
with the name of the joint on it.

Thanks!

Erin

Hi Matthias,

Did you decide not to do this icon?

I created a "pig" icon
http://mapicons.nicolasmollet.com/markers/nature/animals/pig/ and you may use
it for a BBQ icon.
