Compass does not work properly

This applies to KitKat 4.4.4 (CyanogenMod 11.0) 20140910. Full wipe install using NovaFusion’s TWRP Recovery v2.8.0.0 20140911.

In many applications the compass does not work at all or only in a defective way:

• "Swiss Army Knife" does not even shot a compass tool, since it assumes there is no compass sensor.
• OSMAnd does also not show the compass direction.
• GPS Status & Toolbox sometimes shows the compass direction. But most of the time it only points straight north, as it thinks there is no compass at all. Some times it just wanders around and does not stand still.

The only place, where the compass seems to work is the compass tile in the notification drawer (but even there it sometimes just stays straight north).

In Stock ROM all applications work fine - so there seems to be a problem with the compass.
