There are 7 general rules to writing commit messages:

• Blank line between subject and body
• Do not end the subject line with a period
• Write imperatively for the subject
• Limit subject line to 50 characters
• Wrap the body at 72 characters
• Use the body to explain what and why vs. how
• Capitalize each sentence

In general, make it concise and take it seriously to write something readable.
