New look and feel #397

A "live" mockup can be found at http://nuget.osbornm.com or can be cloned at https://github.com/NuGet/Media/tree/master/Compositions/Gallery

The community (mainly @jzy) supplied us with a new redesign of the site. I'd like to discuss weather this is something we want to take in. Lets put aside the time to ingrate as this could be done over several iterations and focus on where we like it or not. You should keep in mind that this is effectively rebranding NuGet as we know it. Currently our brand comes from the site its who we are and what people see because our implementation is well just vs stuff no flashy stuff there. We need to think long and hard about it and should not just get amped up over how cool it looks. Lets start a discussion.

Also this is just a mock up so the content can change and some of the pages on the "live" preview may not work as they may not have been supplied.

I enjoy the new look of the site, it's flashy and sexy and I'd love to take it to the prom but to be honest I'm not sure it's something that I would want to mary and grow old with.

I really like it. The only minor thing I think would like to change is the flow between the header and the main content. It feels a bit jarring in a couple pages. Overall it's really nice though, particularly the way the "Packages" menu item pops up to the header when you're scrolled to the top.

pranavkm commented 12 years ago

I'm really not a fan of the background image at the top. It makes the page look really busy. Getting rid of the background image makes the header appear a lot more barren but I suppose positioning the header items should fix it. Also, death to floating menus!

ddewinter commented 12 years ago

I actually like the background, but I can see what Pranav means because it does interfere with the header text ("Jump Start Your Projects with NuGet"). Content-wise I still like the large "Install NuGet" button from the current site because it pops more than just an inline link. Also if you're going to put a demo video you should put a shorter one up that just shows how to use it--I assume that's what you're going for. Maybe 1 - 2 minutes tops.

Looks good. I think we need to think about how it affects the display of package icons/logos though. Currently they're a bit jarring against the dark background.

howarddierking commented 12 years ago

Agree with @DamianEdwards comment about the logos against the dark background. Could simply adding some kind of 'transition color' border help the jarring transition?

marcind commented 12 years ago

To answer the original question, I think the presented design is too flashy for the NuGet site. I like the layout in general (with the exception of the header taking up too much vertical space) and I'd be fine with the light on dark theme but the header image makes it look like some Vegas night club. Something more toned down would be more suitable.

We want to stick with the current design for now.
