Currently, there are three region trace modes: offset, exact, and at feet. Currently, the offset mode is the default. However, the offset mode's behavior is a bit confusing especially compared to other modes of selection like WorldEdit wands. To make selection less confusing, the default region trace mode should be changed to exact mode.
