Within the Heart of the Nightwood
Rising up into the thick stagnant darkness of the forest canopy, like
stalagmites seeking the cavern roof, corpse-pale spires of trees stretch
high above to completely overwhelm any motes of light from sun or moon.
Serpentine tendrils of mist and fog coil among the tree limbs as they curl
and contort, entwining in infinite irresolvable convolutions. Choking the
gaps between the trees like a living web, barbed vines entwine branches
and roots and rough stone to forge impassable barriers, except where
something large has obviously forced a tenuous path through. Gnarled
roots writhing across torn dirt, bone-white skirted mushrooms, and patches
of blood-slick detritus ensure uneasy footing. The trail is obscured
beneath a chill, cloying fog that seems to evade a steady gaze, only to
intensify as it shrouds the nearby trees again. The trees stir in an
unfelt breeze, creaking branches punctuating the smothered silence, and a
shiver of foreboding crawls up your back.
Among the snapped and broken brambles edging the trail, strands of
coarse, brown fur are snarled upon the thorns.
