Bero's Speech to the Battlemages

Good evening, honored Battlemages!

It is my great honor to speak to you today about the amazing power and versatility of magicka. When faced with a challenge, Battlemages should not just rely on Destruction magic. You should think beyond it! Use other effects to serve your purpose more intelligently. I have gathered examples throughout Tamriel's history where we have seen the power of non-destructive magic demonstrated time and time again by our greatest Battlemages.

Take Zurin Arctus, Tiber Septim's Imperial Battlemage, for example. He was also a master of Mysticism and Conjuration, and was able to use them in combination to create the powerful golem Numidium, which he used to help Tiber Septim conquer Tamriel.

The Imperial Battlemage Hethoth was a master of all schools of magicka and was a valuable asset to Uriel V's expeditionary force to Akavir. He used Conjuration magic to summon powerful daedra and Alteration magic to protect himself and his allies from harm. With varied magicka at his disposal, Hethoth was able to turn the tide of battle in many of his engagements.

We must also remember Empress Morihatha's Battlemage, Welloc. While he was an accomplished diplomat, he was not a powerful student of the School of Destruction. Some of my narrow-minded colleagues believe this was a weakness, but I will point out that he was still recognized as a powerful Battlemage due to his prowess with other schools of magicka.

Or what about Jagar Tharn, the Imperial Battlemage during the reign of Uriel Septim VII? He was not just a master of Destruction magic, but also of Illusion, Conjuration, and Alteration. He was able to combine these schools to create illusions so realistic that they were indistinguishable from reality and enchantments that could control the minds of his enemies. These things were child’s play for this infamous Battlemage.

I posit, therefore, that the School of Destruction is not a true school of magicka at all. Instead, it should be merged with the School of Alteration, for they are closely intertwined. Destructive damage is, in essence, a form of alteration, for it is the changing of reality from an organized form into one less organized. Without this change, the School of Destruction exists as a narrow and shallow avenue of study which attracts impatient students with megalomaniac tendencies. The goal of the “School of Destruction” is simply to learn how to do the maximum amount of damage in the minimum amount of time. And this is a dangerous way of thinking.

In contrast, the School of Illusion is a much more complicated and nuanced school of magicka than the “School of Destruction”. Only limited by one's own imagination, Illusionists can learn to control and manipulate light and shadow, deceive the minds of our enemies, manipulate the emotions of others, and create powerful illusions that can fool even the most powerful of mages.

In conclusion, we must learn to be patient, thoughtful, and creative in our use of magicka. These legendary Battlemages demonstrate the power of magicka and its versatility. They did not allow their potential to be limited only by the school of Destruction, but were learned in all schools of magicka. I urge you, honored Battlemages, to use your magicka to its fullest potential.

Thank you for your time, and may the Nine grant you wisdom and strength.
