Tester comment: The Federal Student Aid system has a school code list for all universities. This may be useful in developing a CV for Organization Code. However, the code system only applies to the University Organization Type. http://ifap.ed.gov/ifap/fedSchoolCodeList.jsp

I like that this topic came up - we recently had a question of where to get codes, since they are required and they should be aligned as much as possible. We were thinking that this was something that should be hidden in user interfaces. In the current EarthChemDB, since we have not yet agreed on an alignment, we are using 'NA'. We are also trying to use the Organization schema for a Lab Catalog where users would be entering information about their laboratory.

I really don't think that it is realistic to have an organization code as a mandatory field. For systems such as EarthChemDB with data from all over the world and the new EarthChem Lab Catalog with the same scope it is not very useful to generate codes that have no global governance and implementation.
