Is anyone using the GTFS-ride spec, and are there any sample datasets? #30

Just a question: I stumbled upon this just now and was wondering if anyone is actively using this GTFS extension (looks like the repo hasn't been updated in a few years). Are there any sample datasets to play with? Can you give me a sense of the scale of adoption in the broader community?

Your timing is uncanny… I just got out of a meeting on this (and a related topic). I’m looping in Dr. Porter at Oregon State University who is doing some groundbreaking development work with a handful of transit providers in urban and small urban markets. He’s on vacation this week but has some pretty exciting things to share when he returns on the 23rd. In the meantime, here’s a linkhttps://www.gtfs-ride.org/ to his project site.

I work with an APC reporting package that I would be interested incorporating the GTFS-Ride into. Since I'll been following the project, I haven't seen an agency adopt it yet - it sounds like that may be changing. I'd be interested in getting involved in the project.

I’m trying not to step all over the work Dr. Porter is doing until he returns next week and can provide a more detailed explanation but… He’s been doing some super interesting work with BlinkTaghttps://blinktag.com/ on the Cherriotshttps://www.cherriots.org/ system at Salem Area Mass Transit District in Salem, Oregon that converts APC data, via GTFS-Ride into demand visualizations by date (or date range), route, day of week, weekday vs. weekend, time of day, GTFS defined trip, and stop. He’s also doing some groundbreaking work with a small urban system in Bend, Oregon. I believe he’s also working with Lane Transit Districthttps://www.ltd.org/ in Eugene, Oregon and Rogue Valley Transportation Districthttps://rvtd.org/ in Medford, Oregon. In addition to BlinkTag, he’s cultivating partnerships with other development partners so I’m confident he’ll be interested in visiting with you.

Will you please reply to all with contact information?

HI @mmorang,

We do have sample datasets compliant with the GTFS-ride standard that we can share with you. As Frank mentions, I'm currently out of the office with very poor internet access. Would it be OK if I get in touch with you again next Monday (8/23) to follow up on your request? BTW, do you work for a transit agency? or are you an independent developer?

Just a question: I stumbled upon this just now and was wondering if anyone is actively using this GTFS extension (looks like the repo hasn't been updated in a few years). Are there any sample datasets to play with? Can you give me a sense of the scale of adoption in the broader community?

Hi @bbafford. As @FrankThomas-ODOT mentions, we're working with several Oregon transit agencies and we've also had conversations with a few CAD/AVL vendors about GTFS-ride. I'd be happy to give you a call next week to tell you more about our project and to answer any questions you may have. I'll send you an email later this week to coordinate a time to chat.

Thank you for your interest. I’m looking forward to seeing how our work may be complementary and to exploring mutual opportunities. Might there be a day/time next week (or in the week that follows) that’d be better than any other for you to take a brief introductory meeting? Please hit me back with a few alternatives, I’ll coordinate on this end and send out invitations.

Yours in Transit,

FT

I am a product engineer at Esri, makers of the ArcGIS software. I design and develop tools for GIS analysis of and with public transit data, among other things.

We don't currently have any specific tools for working with transit ridership data, and this is largely because there is no standard format for this data. It is not feasible or viable for a large company like Esri to invest in creating tools within our core software products unless they can be used by a large number of customers. When the static GTFS standard was created and became widely adopted by agencies worldwide, it made sense to create tools within our suite of products that could ingest and work with transit schedule data. I would like to develop more tools to work with ridership data as well, and I am trying to assess whether this or any other standard is making any headway in gaining adoption.

I came across this project through a reference in a recent proposal for a new standard to include on-time performance metrics in a GTFS-like standard: http://bit.ly/gtfs-performance

Email: mmorang@esri.com Feel free to reach out privately to schedule a meeting. It seems we could have a fruitful discussion. I'm in no hurry, so we can certainly wait until @portadav gets back from vacation.
