Providing pre-generated PNGs #12

What about providing pre-generated PNGs to users? Or a link to such a repository?

I know we can generate the PNGs with the included script, but the process is out of reach to lots of casual users. As an example, on MacOSX, installing Inskcape is not enough, you need XQuartz too, and still then, you may end up with missing libraries to run the script and need to run a 'make' (at least, this was the case on my MacOSX 10.8.5 system) - this is asking way too much to potential users of the WorldWeatherSymbols. Let's make WorldWeatherSymbols more accessible to all by providing pre-generated PNGs? Thanks -- Alex

Looks like GitHub doesn't do downloads anymore. Anyone got suitable webspace we can upload to? At which point I'll update https://github.com/OGCMetOceanDWG/WorldWeatherSymbols/blob/master/scripts/wws_manage.sh to have a publish function which, say, scp's the .zip'd bundle of PNGs to said webspace.

I'll happily host the pngs myself over one of my multiple domains. Free of charge of course. And for as long as you want.

Otherwise, we can look for an existing and more formal public domain image repository (such as one listed here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Public_domain_image_resources ).

@iedwards / @chris-little any ideas for hosting?

As discussed offline with Tom, here's a current copy of the pre-generated pngs for anyone to grab: http://www.slashgeo.org/sites/all/files/WorldWeatherSymbols-png.zip It weights about 900k. I can move elsewhere if you prefer.

Next (and last) step would be to let users know these pre-generated pngs exist! :-) Cheers -- Alex

Thanks @alexandreleroux. I've updated the README file to point to the zipfile, as well as the build target to include README.md. I'll regenerate the zipfile and send to you to post.

Done. Updated endpoint file with latest. The readme however has build characters at its beginning that could be removed.

IMHO, the readme itself needs to be restructured to better present history.

I believe we can close this ticket now.
