OGGM is capable of estimating the volume of tidewater glaciers using a simple parameterization of calving (see Recinos et al., 2019 + paper in review). Recently, the same parameterization was recently added to OGGM's dynamical model (see blog post).
Specific objectives
Both these implementations are currently in the testing phase, and not much work has been done to study:
the applicability of these parameterizations at large scale (regional and or global - they work, but what do they do?)
the impact of these parameterizations on the projections
The student will use the OGGM model and apply it in idealized situations first (on well known glaciers), then at the regional scale driven by CMIP data, and study the influence of calving on the projections.
Profile
Interested in glaciers dynamics and a very good programming background. Since the parameterizations are implemented, the student will not necessarily have to dig into the specifics of the implementation, but if there is interest in the numerics there is a lot to do there as well.
Willingness to work in a super-computer environment required as well.
