Review of the licenses of the data we are sharing #713

I would like to have a systematic review of all the data we are sharing via OGGM. I.e: what are the conditions the users of OGGM should now about, what should they cite, etc.

Once we have such an overview (in the form of a table, or whatever), we can discuss a strategy to make sure we (and our users) comply to these conditions.

@OGGM/oggm-devs , anyone interested in writing this overview? Should not take much more than a couple of hours, and will probably be an interesting dig into the licensing world ;-)

I'm happy to help, e.g. by naming the columns that should be in this table.

I will be happy to do this overview since I had in mind to do this for me, especially about future directions for OGGM. Some colleagues in Grenoble are developing new datasets (surface velocity, ice thickness ...) are not always thinking in the same direction as us (free and open source dataset).

How urgent is this task ? I have currently writing a proposal for a fellowship in Grenoble, the deadline being March 31. Also I can start at the end of March.

Thanks @nchampollion . Let's see if someone chimes in before that. We can do this as a collaborative effort as always, on github or google docs

Note that I don't think OGGM should work only with open data. But:

Yes, that's the spirit of OGGM to be collaborative :-)

I prefer Github than google docs, so we can have the overview in the same repository as OGGM.

For open data, it depends I think. I agree that OGGM has to be able to work with all the data. But if we continue doing OGGM-edu or docker or apps, It's preferable to have open data.

But as you said, having license overview and advertisement would be great !
