New Term Requests: Cancer-related subtypes of treatment #112

Open cstoeckert opened 7 years ago

The Ontology for Biobanking (OBIB) has requests from the NCI Biorepositories and Biospecimen Research Branch (BBRB) that involve treatments of cancer. Scoring of functional impairment will be defined later based on these treatments. Axioms are suggested but if problematic and cause significant delays can go with just textual definitions.

Treatment for cancer: a treatment that has the objective to kill or remove cells that have uncontrolled cellular proliferation, local cell invasion, and metastasis. Alternative term: cancer treatment Subclasses and axioms: treatment (http://purl.obolibrary.org/obo/OGMS_0000090) and achieves_planned_objective some (‘objective specification and is about cancer DOID:162)

Surgical treatment for cancer: a treatment for cancer that involves a surgical procedure as a main part. Subclasses and axioms: ‘treatment for cancer’ and has part some ‘surgical procedure’ (http://purl.obolibrary.org/obo/OMIABIS_0001041)

Adjuvant treatment for cancer: a surgical treatment for cancer that involves chemotherapy or radiotherapy as an additional component of treatment.
Definition source: http://www.medicinenet.com/script/main/art.asp?articlekey=2151 Subclasses and axioms: surgical treatment for cancer and has part some (chemotherapy http://purl.obolibrary.org/obo/IDOMAL_0001284 or radiotherapy http://purl.obolibrary.org/obo/OAE_0000235).

For adjuvant treatment of cancer you shouldn't limit to just chemotherapy and radiation therapy. Immunotherapy is also used.

How about this change? Adjuvant treatment for cancer: a surgical treatment for cancer that involves an additional component of treatment such as chemotherapy, radiotherapy, or immunotherapy. Definition source: http://www.medicinenet.com/script/main/art.asp?articlekey=2151 Subclasses and axioms: surgical treatment for cancer [leave off specifying other treatments]

That sounds okay to me. You leave it open for other kinds of treatments. Also, not sure if this is important, but the NCI Thesaurus seems to prefer 'therapy' over 'treatment'. E.g., Adjuvant therapy. I'm not sure if there is a medical distinction between the uses of 'treatment' and 'therapy'.

Treatment is defined in OGMS but not therapy and these uses fit within treatment so am arguing for sticking to that. Could be open though to alternative term: adjuvant therapy
