Deprecated Codes - Drugs and Procedures

Hello,

I found a few non-standard codes that are 'depreciated' and currently do not map to any standard concept. If possible, it would be helpful to establish a 'map' between this code and an existing standard code (or, if needed, a newly-created standard code).

^ for the drugs: these have many 'Consists of (RxNorm)' and 'Has dose form (RxNorm)' relationships. These is, however, no direct 'maps to' concept.

All of these are deprecated concepts. Deprecated by the source (NLM and CMS). That's the short answer. The long answer is:

• Not sure why the NLM took them out of RxNorm. Maybe because they were supposed to come to the US market, but didn't. We don't know. Often, the same drug exists outside the US and has a RxNorm Extension. For example, 19035043 "Metoclopramide 5 MG/ML Injectable Solution [Reglan]" now lives as 44047292.
• The ICD-10-PCS: They were deprecated at the end of 2017. Which means, there might be data with them. In that case, we should de-deprecate them. Will take a look.

@cgreich I noticed that a few of the depreciated drug codes I mentioned (1707803: Vancomycin 6.67 MG/ML Injectable Solution, 19130210: Vancomycin 8.33 MG/ML Injectable Solution, 19130211: Vancomycin 7 MG/ML Injectable Solution) do not have standard concepts with the same dosage (only 50 MG/ML available). Would it be possible to create new concept_ids for Vancomycin?

ICD10PCS codes will be restored next release. We already keep CPT4 and HCPCS codes standard beyond their "expiration date", so it will be the same for ICD too.

As for RxNorm, source logic behind concept deprecation is opaque. We are not sure how they get their concepts in first place and why are they getting deprecated (were they wrong in the first place or just are no longer marketed?).

Possible solutions would be to once again keep all concepts alive and standard; or to automatically copy deprecated RxNorm concepts to RxNorm Extension each release. Paging @aostropolets - it is her area of expertise.

Just an update on the issue - it is solved for ICD10PCS (de-deprecation, zombie concepts)

It is not solved for RxNorm / RxNorm Extension. I hope we will soon come for the Drug domain overhaul, let's keep this issue as a reminder.

PS: I like @ekorchmar 's idea to automatically create RxNorm Extension
