This may be a gotcha with using jekyll-remote-theme. From what I can tell, the Liquid variables in assets are not getting processed by Jekyll. There are only a couple of files using them, and adding an empty YAML block at the top helps get Jekyll to process them. There may be other better solutions, but just getting the conversation started.
