User Story Statement

As a deaf user, I want to see patterns that display the spoken vowel, so that I can better connect with auditory stimulus and media.

Background

The AudioLux device was developed by CymaSpace, a nonprofit company in Portland owned by and makes products for the deaf and hard-of-hearing. It is meant to serve as an “audio visualizer,” as it is capable of turning sound into visual signals driven by an addressable LED strip.

The AudioLux has been worked on by 2 previous capstone teams. So far, the device is able to display pre-programmed patterns based off microphone or 3.5mm input. It also has a web app to precisely control the device itself over WiFi.
