no OSCAAR module #168

Closed LeoKellett closed 10 years ago

LeoKellett commented 10 years ago

I am new at this so I probably am shooting myself in the foot somehow. I have, I think, all the dependencies available but when I attempt the install, the script complains of no OSCAAR module to add when it is writing to \build and then when it exits the script there is no module to import oscarGUI from. If you can help I would appreciate it. If there is detail I can send to assist let me know.

Dear Leo,

Thanks for downloading OSCAAR! Can you provide some details on your configuration (e.g. OS, 32 or 64 bit version of Python, what version of Python (2.7? or 3.x?).

Cheers,

Luuk

Windows 7 Home Premium Service Pack 1 64 bit OS Python 2.7.6 (default, Nov 10 2013, 19:24:18) [MSC v.1500 32 bit (Intel)] on win32

Thanks for any help you can provide. It “feels” like everything is there except for an buildable/installable OSCAAR module.

And your error occurs when you execute which command? Could you share the command you're using and the error you get? It sounds like something went wrong when you tried to install it, but without the error message it is hard to diagnose what it was.

As a sanity check, I just tried installing again and had no problems with Python 2.7 and Mac OS X 10.6.

LeoKellett commented 10 years ago

Here’s a screen dump from my attempt to do the install. Errors/warnings have “*****” and are indented.

Try to install again in the same way, without deleting anything or downloading it again. It looks like it successfully installed OSCAAR but then it failed to find the installed version. Running it python setup.py install again may be all you need to do.

LeoKellett commented 10 years ago

I wish! I have retried the installation several times including just now and the result is the same each time.

Ok, it sounds like something funny is happening, we'll need to debug a bit. If you don't mind working with us to figure this out, we'll get it working for you and for any other users in the future that may come across this problem.

The first, silly thing to try is to import oscaar by hand. In a terminal, try running Python with

$ python

and then try importing OSCAAR by hand:

>>> import oscaar

What do you see?

Did you start the cmd where you launch setup.py from as Administrator? If not, that may be it (had some issues myself with other Python packages due to that). But before you do that clear out all the OSCAAR files left over from your failed attempt (remove the 'OSCAAR-2.0beta-py2.7.egg' folder located under c:\python27\Lib\site-packages).

I just installed it on a fresh 32 bit Python 2.7.5 installation on Windows 8.1 64 bit, which worked perfectly. So indeed there is something funny happening as Brett is saying.

LeoKellett commented 10 years ago

Tried deleting as you suggest followed by re-installing. Same warning and error messages as before. I hope you saw this first warning in the mess I sent you before. It seems central to me but I am clueless.

Very weird... can you try downloading the zip file again? (https://github.com/OSCAAR/OSCAAR/zipball/master) And try to install that one.

What will most likely work on Windows is a portable python distribution that always works called WinPython. After giving it a folder to extract to, there is a WinPython Control Panel to install packages with (just select the .exe, .zip or .tar files) and also a modified version of windows CMD (set all the paths for Python to this portable version). OSCAAR only works with the second option, so try that one. Link: http://sourceforge.net/projects/winpython/files/latest/download?source=files

Good luck!

LeoKellett commented 10 years ago

New OSCAAR download, WinPython installed. Some differences, some the same. Net result, no oscaar to import when I try manually.

Good luck!

OSCAAR has not been tested with WinPython, only use the standard Python 2.7 distro with OSCAAR.

Have you installed the dependences?

LeoKellett commented 10 years ago

yes, dependencies are installed.

I down loaded OSCAAR per Luuk’s suggestion and retried the installation both with WinPython and standard Python with the same results.

@luukvisser - Have you tried reinstalling lately on Windows? Would you mind?

Sure :) Used my fresh and new WinPython 32 bit 2.7.6.2 extraction. After installing PyFITS I ran (from extracted oscaar dir): python setup.py install. Then the last part of the output:

tried again (fresh download), same results.

I see nothing like the first 6 lines of your listing.

What should be in ..\winpython-32bit-2.7.6.2\python-2.7.6\lib\site-packages ? I have \EGG-INFO which has some .txt files.

Is there a way to see easy-install.pth ? What is the ultimate name of the OSCAAR file to be installed, OSCAAR 2.0beta ? When I search I don’t find anything that looks right.

This is how that folder looks on my computer; you can see OSCAAR near the top of the second column. screenshot 2014-04-18 14 01 46

What might be easier to try, is download the installed version of OSCAAR that I just zipped (32 bit Python 2.7.6.2 on Windows 8.1 64 bit): https://www.dropbox.com/s/sfvqsquy47zqcnk/OSCAAR-2.0beta-py2.7.egg.zip Just extract it in the winpython-32bit-2.7.6.2\python-2.7.6\lib\site-packages folder. Then try importing it again :)

LeoKellett commented 10 years ago

I went to the club observatory and did the install on an unmolested computer per your earlier message (4/16) and it worked after manually installing pyFits and wxPython. The difference was that the OSCAAR extract resulted in a directory (OSCAAR-OSCAAR-254acfc) with some sub directories and a setup.py This was different from what I get with WinZip which was not producing and directories and overwriting the setup.py. I will get your installed version and try it but I need to find out what is going on with my version of zip.

Sound like you found the cause indeed, good job! ;) If the extracted zip is missing some files, I will complain about that for sure.

Haha :D You're welcome!

I'll close this issue, that's will be OK for all of us. If other people in the future also get this error, they will be able to find the solution here.

Cheers, Luuk
