Gracefully close down OSLC mailing lists #2

Open berezovskyi opened 7 years ago

berezovskyi commented 7 years ago

Once #1 is done, we should encourage the subscribers to move over:

@brianking @jamsden @jadelkhoury do we want to retire mailing lists for non-Lyo cases completely and direct people to Discourse forum? Or tell people to discuss specific things on Lyo/OASIS mailing lists?

brianking commented 7 years ago

@berezovskyi I think we should shut down as many lists as we can, if not all. The destinations are summed up well in the first comment here.

I'm quite happy for technical discussions to happen on Discourse as well, if people feel more comfortable. But we might not want to encourage it from the start as implementations will have their own channels, e.g. Lyo. We'll see how it evolves.

jadelkhoury commented 7 years ago

I'm all for less channels. I have not been following your discussions thouroughly, but have you also considered the future of the Eclipse Lyo forum? https://www.eclipse.org/forums/index.php/f/228/ Notice the comment made on top of that link "Future of Eclipse Forums We are considering archiving the Eclipse forums, as there are now many better options available. Please see and comment on Bug 451571."

berezovskyi commented 7 years ago

Hi, I like the idea of shutting those things down, I am also starting to get overloaded (on other topics though). If Eclipse forums shut down, I would be glad if we can get a Lyo section/category in Discourse. On Tue, 15 Aug 2017 at 08:47, jadelkhoury notifications@github.com wrote:

Here is a message I am going to post of OSLC mailman mailing lists. Feel free to use it for other lists as well that you think should move to Discourse. Let me know if you would make any changes.

Dear X List Members,

The OSLC Community is evolving. In the coming months are are launching a new website. You can see how it is progressing, and contribute, here: https://github.com/OSLC/oslc-site-hugo

Further to that, we are making changes to how we communicate. We are shutting how all Mailman mailing lists on October 20, and replacing them with one instance of Discourse. Further details about that will come in a follow-up email before the shut-down. Discourse is a feature-rich open source Web forum platform. It also has mailing list type features, as you can read and send posts via email. While we will be encouraging most groups/categories to be open, there are also privacy features where you limit categories to just certain users.

More details on Discourse: https://www.discourse.org/features

We hope you will join us in the transition, and help propel the OSLC community forward to meet the continued challenges of data integration on the Web.

If you have any questions, please just reply here or reach out to me directly. Brian

Hi Brian

Could you clarify already if you plan to migrate members of existing mailing lists to Discourse? Or do you expect interested members to apply themselves?

@jadelkhoury There will be no migration. I will just be asking people to sign up. Right now you can login with a github account or create a Discourse only login. We can enable other social logins, e.g. Twitter, if we want to lower the barrier to entry.

More details in issue #1

berezovskyi commented 7 years ago

@brianking sent out an email about the upcoming migration some time ago and no objections were received to my knowledge. However, the Discourse installation does not seem to be ready for the prime time yet.

brianking commented 6 years ago

I sent an email to all lists on 29 September. I forgot to mention the shutdown date, but I had 20 October so that it doesn't roll over into another billing period which starts on 22 October.

I'm working this week on getting Discourse into shape. Could use some help on seeding some categroies, see issue #6

brianking commented 6 years ago

Does anyone know any good tools to download archives of lists? The best I could find is:

https://martin-thoma.com/how-to-analyze-mailman-archives/

berezovskyi commented 6 years ago

I also used wget to download the wiki. Just make sure to use relative URLs so that we can put the archive anywhere later.

Why don't we just put all the lists in readonly mode?

brianking commented 6 years ago

Because we pay $15/month for each one.
