Pull upstream changes from Jerry Hoff's branch #9

Jerry Hoff and other contributors have fixed some bugs and have also improved database connectivity not to be platform dependent, by supporting SQLite.

Please pull upstream changes (through this pull request) so we can have an up-to-date base to work form
