Sounds like that would look good. I don't have a iPhone that isn't 16:9 atm (usin 8 plus). But pretty sure it be useful for devices that are wider.
Better yet, this post describes how to modify widescreen patches to any aspect ratio. It's pretty simple.

Other than stretch to screen doesn't fill screen on new iPhones. I feel if that issue is fixed that we need option that stretches to a aspect ratio.
I've had example on my 8 plus where I would have 16:9 set in aspect ratio for burnout 2 and have it enabled in game and it would be squished looking and not display 16:9 and would only work if the set stretch to screen. This feature requests on making a stretch to 16:9 option. I don't remember but I think some games also use 3:2 but most are 4:3 on GameCube and many anamorphic widescreen in wii and some true widescreen ofc.
