Undefined parameters (engineering, flight data) #48

Open kerfoot opened 2 years ago

I've seen the list of parameters:

https://vocab.nerc.ac.uk/collection/OG1/current/

I'm wondering about engineering data other than those parameters defined in the above link (pitch, roll, etc.). Can we add those to the NetCDFs? If we do, how do we deal with the PARAMETER(N_PARAM) variable. Are those parameters that are not defined above added to this variable? Do we make up our own names? Do we not include these parameters?

Looking for clarification on this.

If you can propose new OG1 terms they can be added to the vocabulary. One of the key pieces of work we need to do is establish community governance of glide vocabularies with the associated training to make this possible.

Most of these are engineering/flight parameters that are specific to the glider type, so proposing names for new parameters could get very tedious and make managing the parameters difficult. Should we (operators/data managers) not include parameters that are not explicitly listed here: https://vocab.nerc.ac.uk/collection/OG1/current/ ?

The initial idea of the format was to allow to include any parameter, variable, metadata as soon as the OG1.0 elements are there. If this is idea if still ok, then any author could include the "extra' information they need.

However, I agree with Justin, regarding flight and engineering parameter I think it is relevant to have them in the format with controlled vocab.

Considering this has not yet been discussed by the data team I would suggest to start a new list with those parameter that will be included in the next version of the format.

I will open an issue on the community governance.

@vturpin please link the issue on community governance here. In the next version of OG format, I think it would be fantastic to identify and draft names for the most common and useful engineering variables (often relevant for post processing). Just a handful like pitch, roll, heading, volume displacement, (measured and commanded for each?). It's a big job but something we could start if we have a way to get community involved.

@glidermann This is a topic to pick up at the workshop later this month.

@OceanGlidersCommunity/format-maintainers , I flagged this one as OG-0.1 requirement, but I think I intended 1.0?! I think we have higher priorities for 0.1, do you agree? If anyone disagrees, please feel free to change its milestone.
