This would allow us to clean up space on the table of results so that we have more room for editing.

Is it worth adding a cog for settings which launches this stuff out of an action panel on the right?

Ooh. Yes, I think that's a good idea. Dialog Service is a great way to put functionality in a nice panel, can easily import/export data from it to handle this.
