Suggestions: Additional items, and using more Yellow Mushrooms #41

First of all thanks for this mod. It's awesome and well-balanced. I appreciate the time and effort you have put into it.

I was thinking that it would be nice to have more uses for Yellow Mushrooms, and started thinking of suggestions I could make for your awesome mod. So here are some attempts to use Yellow Mushrooms while keeping within the Honey theme:

Food Health Stamina Total Healing(hp/tick) Duration (sec) Biome Progression Recipe
Venison casserole 16 48 64 3 1500 2: Black Forest Cooked deer meat x1, Carrot x2, Yellow mushroom x4, Honey x1
3-meat pottage 50 15 65 3 1500 2: Black Forest Honey brushed neck tail x1, Pork tenderloin x1, Venison loin x1, Yellow mushroom x4
Sausages and mushrooms 55 30 85 4 1500 3: Swamp Sausages x1, Yellow mushrooms x4, Honey x2
Kabobs 65 25 90 3 1500 4: Mountains Honey sweetened sausages x1, Marinated wolf meat x1, Venison loin x1, Yellow mushrooms x4
Mushroom Burger 70 36 106 5 1800 5: Plains Bread x1, Barbecued lox x1, Yellow mushroom x4

The numbers are kinda from the hip, I can put more thought into them if you are receptive. I think it would be nice to have some foods in which Health and Stamina are closer in value rather than so different--but still balanced. Maybe the above suggestions don't reflect that notion very accurately, but I was trying to be conservative. Perhaps the lower number could be upped a bit (and possibly trim the higher number if balance deems it).

Those are just some suggestions, I could probably come up with some more if you are interested. My hope would be to try and keep it fairly well-balanced with vanilla Valheim.

Other random thoughts and suggestions:

Anyway, well done. Thanks again for your mod. Please let me know if these ideas are something you are receptive to, and I will be happy to put in additional thought and effort if you want to discuss them.

Sorry I was so late in replying. These are great ideas and love the effort and thought you put into them. I struggle alot with balancing so I'm hesitant to offer corrections and normally take others advice on the subject. I agree with using more Yellow Mushrooms.

I'd be happy adding all of these with an exception, I feel that the Kabobs are too similar to the existing wolf skewer

Honey Sweetened Sausages is certainly a clunky name I agree with you there. The icons used to be very cartoonishly yellow until I put some actual effort into making them look ok, maybe I went too far the opposite direction as I wanted it more subtle as the honey is supposed to be a complement rather than the main feature of the dishes.

I was apprehensive about even adding Lox Jerky as I didn't want to invalidate alot of the food sources with such a simple to craft item, I believe when I made the values I looked at the ratio of the Cooked version and the Jerky versions of the vanilla and used that as a multiplier to scale it up on other Jerkies.

As I haven't used the core code since February I'll be a little rusty but I'll implement them when I can.

No need to apologize for your reply timing, I am not in a hurry. I am happy you are receptive to these ideas. I put some more thought into it and here's the latest of my ideas:

Food Health Stam Total hp/tick Duration Stack Biome Yield Recipe
Carmelized Mushrooms 18 38 56 2 900 20 2: Black Forest 2 Yellow mushroom x4, Mushroom x1, Honey x2
Venison Casserole 20 45 65 3 1500 10 2: Black Forest 1 Cooked deer meat x1, Carrot x2, Yellow mushroom x4, Honey x1
3-meat Pottage 48 20 68 3 1500 10 2: Black Forest 1 Honey Brushed Neck Tail x1, Pork Tenderloin x1, Venison Loin x1, Yellow mushroom x4
Sausage Hash 55 30 85 4 1500 10 3: Swamp 1 Sausages x1, Carmelized Mushrooms x1
Death-by-Meat Feast 80 36 116 4 1800 10 3.5: Ocean 1 Carmelized Mushrooms x1, 3-meat Pottage x1, Teriyaki Serpent x1, Serpent stew x1
Vegetable Stew 36 60 96 4 1600 10 4: Mountains 1 Carrot x3, Turnip x3, Onion x3, Carmelized Mushrooms x2
Bushmeat Goulash 60 36 96 4 1600 10 4: Mountains 1 Honey Sweetened Sausages x1, Marinated Wolf Meat x1, Venison Loin x1, Carmelized Mushrooms x2
Jerky Jubilee 50 50 100 4 1800 20 5: Plains 1 Boar jerky x1, Deer Jerky x1, Wolf jerky x1, Lox Jerky x1
Mushroom Burger 70 38 108 5 1800 10 5: Plains 1 Bread x1, Barbecued Lox x1, Sausage Hash x2

I think these are better thought out, but again these are just suggestions, feel free to push back on, or abandon any of them.

I still think the icons should be easier to interpret with a glance to identify your "honeyed" version from the normal version, but I think I have a better idea than what I suggested earlier. Gimme a while and I will mock something up and attach it to another comment.

You make a good point about the Lox Jerky. That ratio approach is very sound, stick with it.

Please let me know if there's anything I can do to assist. Again, thanks for your efforts in making this mod in the first place, it is really good.

Okay, now that I have looked at your HoneyPlus icons more carefully they are actually really good. A lot of them have this yellow highlight/reflection along the bottom, brilliant. I think part of my problem is that I haven't spent enough time looking at them to easily distinguish the difference, and eventually I will get it. (Kinda like noises in the Swamp, I've played there enough now I know which swamp noises I can ignore, and which ones mean I need to turn around and start fighting for my life 😄.)

Anyway, here the mockup for my idea. (This example uses the Cooked Lox Meat pic, obviously, if you go with this idea you'd want to use your awesome Barbecued Lox pic instead.) Given what I said above, this may be a moot point anyway. honey-lox

If I may make a suggestion, you could make all the items configurable in the config file, like the author of OdinHorse has done, as shown that mod's config file (I've edited out the non-food portions of the config):

Raelaziel.OdinHorse.cfg.txt

Previously when this was requested in nexus comments I believe some users used this mod

Found it on Thunderstore, which is good... https://valheim.thunderstore.io/package/MilkyTeam/ValheimFoodConfig

But hasn't been updated in 10 months, which seems sketchy. And someone posted a bug report saying it stopped working back in April: https://www.nexusmods.com/valheim/mods/2104?tab=bugs

There are some alternatives like https://valheim.thunderstore.io/package/Smoothbrain/FoodCustomizer/

Earlier I had made a critical comment about the color of your icon pictures. With some additional play time and more thought, I think that comment was overly critical, and I appreciate your measured response. Well done. Perhaps angling the HoneyPlus food icon differently than its vanilla counterpart would provide an additional visual cue, but they are quite nicely done as is.

Thought of another food suggestion:

Food Health Stam Total hp/tick Duration Stack Biome Yield Recipe
Odin's Toast 38 70 108 4 1800 20 2: Plains 1 Bread x1, Odin's Delight x1

I think one of my motivating factors for thinking of these suggestions, is an attempt to keep some of the ingredients from previous biomes still relevant in the later game.
