Please help. Usdt from poloniex sent to usd in coinbase and now trapped. #530

Closed brettazar closed 6 years ago

brettazar commented 6 years ago

I've tranfered about 6k from poloniex usdt account to coinbase usd wallet aND now learned that money is gone. I found the transaction in tether but have no clue how to access it or to reverse the transaction back to poloniex. This is my savings... I'm dead without it. Please please please help

mrsnappy51 commented 5 years ago

Correct, giving up the keys would create a security risk. The more realistic way for the money to be retrieved would be if the built new platform in where people could deposit usdt on coinbase. The customer service people are nobody's and you will never get anywhere with them. This needs to go to Charlie Lee. I made enough of a fuss that he addressed my issue by giving me the information I just stated. I've spent a decent amount of time thinking about this and one idea I had was to get as many people as we can to give detailed info of how much they lost, when the lost their money, and a very brief explanation of how. Show up to the headquarters with someone filming and attempt to have a conversation with Charlie Lee. Naturally we would most likely get turned away at the front door but we could still wait around for him or another developer to come outside and do the same thing journalist do when they ambush someone. Then turn the footage over to as many entities as possible. News organizations, youtubers with big channels like trevon james, or cryptonick amongst others and if we could get enough traction that coinbase got a significant backlash or law makers started pressuring the terms and conditions wouldn't matter. Because as of now they are pretty untouchable. The two lawyers who I contacted both said the same thing. We ducked up, they aren't responsible.

The question I have is, could they even do something about it if they wanted to? The customer support acts like it’s gone and they have no control of where it went. I’ve heard others say online that if we had access to our private keys we could recover the USDT. This is considered a privacy m/security risk per coinbase so thy will not release that data. Does coinbase have the funds or are the funds just lost? They went somewhere? This link below says the funds are owned by the address they were sent to which happens to be a bitcoin address. It seems if we had access to our private keys we could creat an Omni wallet and transfer them. I’m not a technical genius but it sounds possible.

The next thing to do with everyone is file a petition and include dollar amounts. Maybe if the lawyers saw the dollar amounts they may get interested if they see what the potential win would look like. They may just realize it’s a brick wall based on coinbase terms and conditions. If nothing else if we all make noise on Twitter and social media it may make a difference.

You can count me as someone who has 4K in tether sitting in a coinbase bitcoin account and can’t do anything about it. I can see it but it’s been there for a year now. Coinbase support has been zero help over the past year. How is not a class action case?

brettazar commented 5 years ago

Damn. What can we do?

M new here. Please add me to the list. I send 2687 USDT from biance to my bitcoin wallet in Coinbase. Coinbase replied to my request so fast, and here is the reply. "Hello, Thank you for contacting Coinbase. Your Coinbase account includes a wallet for each cryptocurrency supported by Coinbase. When sending cryptocurrency to Coinbase, you must send it to the correct wallet in your Coinbase account. If you send cryptocurrency that Coinbase does not support or send cryptocurrency to a wallet that isn’t specifically for that cryptocurrency, those funds cannot be recovered by Coinbase. For a list of digital currencies supported on Coinbase, please visit: https://support.coinbase.com/customer/en/portal/articles/2630943. Coinbase always recommends sending a small amount of currency if you are in doubt. Thanks, Coinbase Support"

o0wkr0o commented 5 years ago

I read several posts of missending coin cases. People could retrieve them by using the recovery seed. (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5134506.0) But since Coinbase don't want to provide the security seed according to (https://support.coinbase.com/customer/portal/articles/1526452-where-can-i-find-the-private-keys-for-my-wallet-), and that's the reason why we can't do anything about it. I gathered what I saw but I am not sure if I am right about them, so feel free to point out. Besides, I wanna ask that are the trapped USDT safe in the place? Or there is a possibility other than Coinbase company can take it? And if the USDT under the address is safe, is that means if one day Coinbase support USDT, the money can be retrived by the Coinbase team?

somite4k commented 5 years ago

I think the money is gone forever :(, my dad sent $13k of tether to coinbase btc wallet and the money is now gone, we just want our money back

dexX7 commented 5 years ago

Hi,

please always contact the Coinbase support in these cases. We really, really hope they will support USDT recovery at some point and we are more than willing to help them.

Until this point, the USDT are stuck and kept by Coinbase.

Hi everyone. I'm in the same, or at least a very similar, predicament as all of you. I recently lost $6K after transferring USDT (Tether) from Binance to my BTC wallet in Coinbase. Like the rest of you, I've gotten the runaround from Coinbase essentially claiming "they can't do anything" even though, to me, it sounds like they are simply too lazy to address this problem. I have since reached out to four attorneys but haven't heard anything. I remain in a state of shock and disbelief that there is not some sort of guardrail against this type of scenario, especially considering how common it appears to be.

I have to wonder if we have enough here to start a class action. Based on the responses here and on reddit and other sites, it looks like the losses total in the hundreds of thousands, particularly when considering all currency transactions to Coinbase, not just Tether. Does anyone have any ideas on how to get that ball rolling? We can all chalk this up as a costly mistake, or we can take action and at least try to get our money back...especially given the money is just "floating" out there and Coinbase is CHOOSING not to address the issue. Who is with me on this?

mrsnappy51 commented 5 years ago

Its gone. I spent months contacting lawyers. Nothing to be done except beat the fuck out of charlie lee

What if we reached out to Andrew Yang's office? Probably swamped with a million other things, but this type of thing perfectly lines up with his stated policy proposal of greater consumer protection, particularly as it pertains to cryptocurrency.

mrsnappy51 commented 5 years ago

Go ahead. I've been stonewalled at every turn and i don't even know if my money is retrievable at this point. That was almost 3 years ago. It's not even the usdt that stings the most. It's that i only cashed out to send back to coinbase and buy back into bitcoin to make a quick profit. That was 40 bitcoin at that point.

Coinbase claims its not their problem. The location it was sent to would need its own key which is too expensive and risky they say. I lost 5k about 5 years ago in that usdt transfer.

Hi, thank you for your reply!

I did contact them and got a generic email "Thanks for contacting Coinbase Support. It appears that this transaction involved USDT (Tether) being sent to Coinbase. I can clarify what had happened here.

Tether is a type of cryptocurrency which runs on top of the Ethereum, Bitcoin and Tron blockchain. Tether is not a currency Coinbase offers support for in its trading and wallet services. Unfortunately, it is not feasible for our team to recover any Tether sent to a Coinbase wallet.

While transfers of Tether include a small amount of BTC sent to an address, any Tether associated with this transaction is not accessible.

While transfers of Tether include a small amount of BTC sent to an address, any Tether associated with this transaction is not accessible.

I tried like hell a few years ago to recover the 7k I transferred from Binance USDT to Coinbase with no luck. The only hope we have is if Coinbase someday decides to support USDT. I own my mistake however the simple solution would be for Coinbase to not allow the transaction to go though in the first place but they do not care. These types of situations are exactly why it will be extremely difficult for common people to want to risk a penny in crypto. Anyways, I’ve accepted my loss so life moves on. I check periodically to see if anything has changed but I don’t stress it anymore. I wish you guys the best of luck.

More important than this craziness is that we have our health. Mrs Snappy so good to hear from you. God Bless and Happy Holidays!! I will start out the new year asking once again and seeking assistance with this matter. Coinbase is a big cash earner and to them our money means nothing. They are not trying to seize it they are just maintaining security as they believe. It is my hope we can convince them it’s better to assist rather then the courts forcing them to do so. Bad PR and the like. Don’t give up hope. I will get our money back. God Bless!!!

I am a single dad. Work a couple jobs to make ends come close... I am willing to aggressively try to petition for coinbase to help reunite us with our coins if you guys agree to give me a tip or reward if I am successful. My loss is only 300 while it is alot it doesn’t pay the bills. I work a lot. Please think about it. Each of you may never get this money back but allowing me to speak on behalf of the collective gives us a hive mentality approach. Together we are stronger. I graduated from Thomas Jefferson HS for Science and Technology as well as Virginia Tech. I will approach this professionally and diligently until we are successful. I need each of your consensus in this Email so I can speak on your behalf. If you would also pledge a reward that might help when it comes Time for me to hire the lawyer we will need to get over the finish line. This is serious and I will await each of your responses. Hi all, late to the party here but I, like many of you, lost money in the exact same way. I "transferred" 6K last summer from a Binance USDT account to a Coinbase BTC account and, poof, money gone. I worked through all of the channels I could: Coinbase customer support (I moved up the chain of command, but was ultimately told there was nothing they could do about this without the "key", whatever that means); Binance customer support (informed me I could only get money back with Coinbase's help...great); Reddit and other forums (including here); and I even got to a point where I was working with a California-based law firm to attempt to retrieve my money. I even reached out to the NY Times to clue them in on this, as I think this would be a great highlight on the dangers of Crypto trading. Stonewalled or ignored in every instance.

Paul: I would be more than happy to pay $500 to you if you were able to do this. From my experience, it has been literally impossible but I don't understand how someone, ANYONE, out there isn't able to help here?? Makes no sense to me. Anyway, like some of the others here, I've moved on from thinking about this on a day-to-day but I'd be lying if I said I don't still think about it and that it doesn't infuriate me. Let's get our money back guys.

Hi Paul I was going to take them on myself and sue them ,exposing them to the world's press, going to every authority, like the SEC the ombudsman and many more, I was not going to let this go, but if you are going to take on the challenge and hopefully resolve the problem with coinbase then we might as well join with one voice, so count me in for 10%.I don't know how you intend to approach this, perhaps you can let me know your strategy. I have already informed Coin base of my intentions and that I will never give in.They must not get away with this.!!!!

I am putting together a list and a formal presentation. We first must stand as a group and approach in a way that encourages assistance without legal intervention. If that doesn’t work...
