Implications of separating the web server from database server #1

Moving to Heroku from Webfaction changes the relative physical locations of the web and database servers.

Webfaction (and other shared hosting)

The web and database servers are hosted on the same physical hardware
Communication back and forth between the servers has low latency
Consequence: little performance penalty is felt when making database requests

Heroku (and similar scalable hosting platforms)

Heroku separates web servers and database serves onto different machines within AWS's data centers
This introduces higher latency for communication between the servers
Consequence: uncached pages with multiple database calls take significantly longer to be served to the user

Actions

Profile and rank page types based on their database access requirements
Optimize database access for affected pages
