FI_22215: Basemaps #22

Hi Nicolas,

Regarding the basemaps dropdown.

The "OneGeology" title isn't very descriptive, could we change to "Aerial with Labels"

Also 4 options seems too many, Road and OSM have a lot of overlap, could I suggest we remove road and only use OSM.

and lastly for the above to work we need to change which OSM tiles we're using. The tiles on the OneGeology portal are significantly different to the maps shown on openstreetmap.com (see attached) please can we update to pull in the tiles from openstreetmap as they display them (this then is of sufficient quality to make the road layer redundant).

Can we remove the OneGeology basemap and use one of the bing maps as default?

We have limited hits on bing basemap so we should keep free basemap by default. Let's vote in TIG meeting

nmtoken commented 10 months ago

How many hits are allowed before we have to pay? How many hits does the portal get (or are we already exceeding the free service limits)?

Terms of Use in the tile service we are using is: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/maps/bing-maps/product.

Assume BRGM have a 'Limited License`

Section 3. Limited License uses. (a) Transaction limits. If you are licensing the Services for Education, Non-Profit, or Windows App development use, you may not, nor may you permit End Users to, exceed 50,000 cumulative Billable Transactions (which will be free of charge) as defined in the Documentation, within any 24-hour period.

Panning around map for a minute or so can generate up to 1000 image (tile) requests; if we have 22,000 visitors per year (averages 60 per day, but assume we have more visitors on the weekdays), then we could exceed the daily limit.
