Cannot save text variables into spells #1210

Issue description

When I was working on the xstate plugin, I was having trouble saving the spells for review with other developers since the variables of xstate are lost.

Steps to reproduce

  1. Make a spell
  2. Add text variables
  3. Save as a spell
  4. Load a spell and see that things are lost.
