New Details Pane #365

Open jedikalimero opened 4 years ago

As you may know, Microsoft decided in Windows 8 to move the Details Pane of the File Exprorer from the old bottom position to a right side position and the consequence is you can't have Details Pane and Preview Pane open at once anymore.

What I propose is to create a new Explorer add-on as part of Open Shell that would be a bottom Details Pane, so the user would be able to keep open the Preview Pane and the "Open Details Pane" at the same time. This Pane would show the same information in the same way that the old Details Pane showed it. Or maybe this Pane could be an enhanced Details Pane with better functionality. The right side system Details Pane would be still there but the user wouldn't need it anymore so he could forget about it and just use the Open Details Pane in combination (or not) with the Preview Pane.

There is already a solution called Old New Explorer that brings back the bottom Details Pane by replacing the right side Details Pane but this is a more agressive solution because it replaces system libraries with customized old versions of them. This approach may cause issues every time those system libraries are updated so I think the approach I propose would be more system friendly.

Just so you know, you can disable the classic Libraries and Computer folder preferences in OldNewExplorer, I don't know if it would be worth rewriting Open-Shell for something that is handled well by another app.

It would indeed be neat to have an open source alternative to OldNewExplorer, but you need very much know-how in order to keep it from breaking with further Windows Updates. Also, the "Classic Explorer" part of Open Shell seem pretty much dead now, so unless someone can be found to implement further features, we have to be grateful that it even gets maintained anymore.
