There are two issues in the grid layout:

when a country code is added, it uses up figure space. Better to have the country code above the flag. In this way it's positioning is also consistent
not all available figure space is used. Check scaling of the figure

Fixed in 1.5.2.2. Figure scaling is limited to maximum 2x the smallest scale to prevent using wildly different scales for figures.
