Identifying nutrition-sensitive ag interventions #5

Note: there are other "cross-cutting" issues like this that people have expressed interest in as well. This includes gender, climate change... Others?

See #4 which discusses nutrition sensitive

Laia reported that both FAO and ACF and Results for Development have been working on proposed updates to DAC Sector codes to reflect Nutrition Sensitive interventions.

A slight correction to the above - ACF and R4D are working on nutrition sensitive codes. FAO is focusing on food security.

In thinking about this, we should keep in mind the SUN Methodology and Guidance Note to Track Global Investments in Nutrition.

Also, to add a bit more context about what nutrition-sensitive means (from endnote ii of this article):

The definitions, consistent with the Lancet 2013 Maternal and Child nutrition series, are: Nutrition specific: • Interventions or programs that address the immediate determinants of fetal and child nutrition and development—adequate food and nutrient intake, feeding, caregiving and parenting practices, and low burden of infectious diseases • Examples: adolescent, preconception, and maternal health and nutrition; maternal dietary or micronutrient supplementation; promotion of optimum breastfeeding; complementary feeding and responsive feeding practices and stimulation; dietary supplementation; diversification and micronutrient supplementation or fortification for children; treatment of severe acute malnutrition; prevention and management; nutrition in emergencies

Nutrition sensitive: • Interventions or programs that address the underlying determinants of fetal and child nutrition and development—food security; adequate caregiving resources at the maternal, household and community levels; and access to health services and a safe and hygienic environment—and incorporate specific nutrition goals and actions • Nutrition-sensitive programs can serve as delivery platforms for nutrition-specific interventions, potentially increasing their scale, coverage, and effectiveness • Examples: agriculture and food security; social safety nets; early child development; maternal mental health; women’s empowerment; child protection; schooling; water, sanitation, and hygiene; health and family planning services

Im slightly unclear in terms of the action here.

It's great if it's all three! We should segment into relevant / actionable issue to progress

Overall the goal is to make it possible to identify nutrition-sensitive ag interventions. The ideal solution to that (in my view) would be to identify an existing classification system that would facilitate this (see my comment on policy-marker regarding the third option).

As noted above, there is a proposal to modify the OECD DAC purpose codes so it's possible to track all nutrition-sensitive interventions. You can see the proposal here. This was being considered at a WP-STAT meeting taking place July 4th and 5th. I am following up with ACF to get an update on the outcome of the proposal.
