[Question] Lag with new version OpenBoard (1.7.1)

Hi there,

First of all thanks for updating the software. As a math teacher it's become invaluable for my classes.

A quick question: as of version 1.7.1 I experience a lot of lag when writing in OpenBoard and I can't seem to find the reason. Is this issue a known issue I can solve? When using an older version of OpenBoard it works perfectly fine.

I'm working on a 2018 macbook pro running Sonoma 14.4.1

Hi,

It's not a known issue. Do you experience the same issue with 1.7.0 ? => https://github.com/OpenBoard-org/OpenBoard/releases/download/v1.7.0/OpenBoard-1.7.0.dmg

Please note that OpenBoard is tested for macOS 12 and 13, so maybe there's a specific issue with 14.4.

Unfortunately, the problem also occurs with version 1.7.0

Is it a general bad performance issue or just when making annotations on the board ?

It only occurs when writing - not a general bad performance issue.

I don't have macOS 14.4 so I can't confirm it. No issue for me on macOS 13. If anyone else having macOS 14.4 can confirm or not the issue, it would be helpful.

I'm also experiencing lag with the new version but I am running Windows 10. It does only seem to be when I'm writing but it is noticeably slower since the upgrade to 1.7.1.

I am using a Wacom graphics tablet with Windows Ink installed and that has never worked well with Openboard, but it would look untidy as though I was using ink that was smudging a bit. The speed was never an issue.

Same, experiencing lag immediately after updating to the latest 1.7.1 version. The lag happens when writing, moving objects, or even moving the eraser around. I'm on Windows 11, never had this lag before.

Me too, it has gotten kinda slow and always interferes with what i write. I don't know how to fix it cause it's a useful app for me too.

I have just installed 1.7.0 and it is obviously running slow. It isn't just my stylus that is slow, the cursor can't keep up with the mouse movement.

I had rolled it back to 1.6.4 and that is fine. I am going to have to put it back because I need it for my work but it is easy enough to install a newer version if you want me to try anything else.

Do you all still experience the issue when the live thumbnails on the left palette are hidden ?

It is much smoother and faster with the thumbnails hidden. I had never tried running with the thumbnails hidden because they are useful to me.

Same thing happened to me (windows 11) https://github.com/OpenBoard-org/OpenBoard/issues/981#issue-2312458096 to this day, the only actual solution I found is to use pen pressure+windows ink which solves the issue but makes everything more difficult to read

I also experience lags when using the pen. It seems the culprit is that it tries to hide the '+' symbol of the pen before attempting to write. I will suggest that you remove that animation feature so that the pen works like the other tools. It seems the eraser also have a similar issue but it is minimal
