merge and minimize difference in fork #97

[x] restore broken ie11 build
[x] figure out the min/non-min bundle changes

It seemed most pragmatic to restore the old build system for IE11 (but only for IE11). So now we have two very different build systems, and it's quite messy.

The reason I chose this is that IE11 support is expected to be removed, after which the messy parts can be removed using the commit below as guidance.

@pbowen-oc, is the "jini" functionality still required or can this be removed?

(will do under new issue if it can be removed)

@MartijnR - We have a customer who still uses it, so it needs to stay functional.
