this is a feature that needs to get built out on the content side - we have a section in WP for communities, and the idea was to add a bunch of cities/relevant populated areas
the list can then be adjusted for each indicator - it’s too complex to rank the thousands of map features by value every time a new indicator is loaded so we had decided that these lists would be managed manually to highlight specific cities that are relevant to the selected indicator
so if you choose an indicator that has this field set in wordpress, those cities are displayed in the sidebar with numerical rankings
if not, the sidebar shows the entire list of cities (without the rankings as they aren’t specified anywhere for that indicator)
@JulieVdV recommends on Fri 2022-10-14 morning:
Let's show the entire list of cities, not dependent on any variable. If you don't have an existing list, let's do the top 15 from this list: Geoba.se: Gazetteer - Canada - Top 100+ Cities by Population - Top 100+ By Country () at http://www.geoba.se/population.php?cc=CA&page=1, plus capital cities for each province/territory (so add: Regina, Whitehorse, Yellowknife, Iqaluit, Victoria, Charlottetown, Fredericton, Halifax and St. John's)

Can we get rid of the cities highlighted on the left or ensure that they are actually the top 10 of each variable? Or perhaps the top 10 according to the SRI (@plesueur) if we just want 1 list that stays the same for each variable? I think right now we are just picking a selection of major cities in Canada, but then why is it sometimes an enumerated list (second example screenshot) with a different number of cities? I don’t think having this list is critical to the launch, so it’s definitely easier to scrap it or make it just a list of the 10 most populous cities in Canada.
Also when I actually clicked on the cities, it sometimes took me to a view of the city zoomed out to the CSD level, and sometimes zoomed in enough that I could see neighbourhoods. Not critical, but would be nice if this behaviour were consistent.
