Ambitious proposal (and great title!). Would a Python programmer be useful to you?
Thank you Kevin. I am glad you liked the challenge. A python programmer would most certainly be useful. We would also need to find someone keen enough to push this forward as it is unlikely I will have much time to do it myself.
Best, Carlo

This challenge was merged with challenge #13 and selected by team: ASK-ERA
Problem (short description, max 150 words) Climate change is altering the frequency of occurrence and the intensity of several weather extremes. Historical records for maximum temperature for example are systematically broken. The challenge is to develop a system able to provide timely heads-up about the possibility of an unprecedented event to occur in the coming month anywhere on the globe. This could be used to provide traceable and transparently produced warnings to the media and the general public. Such a service could be used as a benchmark to debunk the of the annual occurrence of untraceable tabloid-style nonsense.
Proposed solution (short description, max 200 words) The would be to compare the bias-corrected seasonal prediction ensemble with the historical climatology at each place on the planet for a specific event (e.g. heat-wave, accumulated precipitation, wind capacity factor, length of the growing season,...). If the probability for this event to occur -as estimated by the calibrated forecasts- exceeds a pre-defined threshold (e.g 75%) they you present this to the users via a map layer.
Data (what data do you need? what format?) Seasonal predictions and re-analysis
