What is the purpose of a defintion of "Open Design"? #11

Is it to be a starting point for a legal licensing scheme or should it serve for other purposes too?

Hi @LFSaw ! First of all, it is the first project of the Open Design Working Group at http://design.okfn.org/, so one of the goals is to build a community for discussing Open Design at the Working Group. I could write an Open Design Definition very quickly, since I've been researching and working on it for 7 years, but we wanted to have a shared and collective discussion around it, in order to build a community that collaborates for Open Design.

The main objective is that we need a shared definition of what is Open Design and its implications, too many times I see people discussing about it with different definitions and avoiding all the kinds of design that are not product (but are open source!).

And then it is also the starting point for other projects at the Open Design Working Group, and a license (or more than one) could probably such a project, since many people are talking and asking about it ;)
