HI, i just found this definition which has as reference Usman Haque, Low Tech Sensors and Actuators, 2003, but i cannot confirm it is in that book/report.
Open design is the development of physical products, machines and systems through use of publicly shared design information. The process is generally facilitated by the Internet and often performed without monetary compensation. The goals and philosophy are identical to that of the open-source movement, but are implemented for the development of physical products rather than software.
== opps, I thought I have sent this emails already ==
hey all,
you can find that PDF online here: http://lowtech.propositions.org.uk/lowtech-sensors-and-actuators.pdf
Also there was a project open source architecture workshopshttp://www.haque.co.uk/opensourcearchitecture.php(by Usman and many others) and open architecture https://sites.google.com/site/openarchitecture1/ (by Cesar Harada)

Thanks! I've just added it to the repository.
It already looks like we have existing definitions for working on our, of course feel free to add new ones!
We should add more existing definitions of Open projects / fields / ... in order to compare them and see what we can take from them! Please help us with this task!
