Search flaw #720

Google search for socfin KCD - brings up this page https://opendevelopmentcambodia.net/tag/socfin-kcd/# which is from ODC. Note that the results are tagged with socfin kcd and are all news items. 2 of the 6 have socfin in the description the other 4 don't.

But when you do the exact search in ODC using same phrase it doesn’t bring up the same results: https://opendevelopmentcambodia.net/?s=socfin-kcd only one of the six items listed in the google search. This has the exact match term in the description.

When I take out the - in the search term it brings up 4 results https://opendevelopmentcambodia.net/?odm_advanced_nav=1&odm_filter_=1&odm_filter_s=socfin+kcd&odm_filter_date_start=&odm_filter_date_end= 3 are the same but one is different.

Another reason for tagging using keywords.

@acorbi -- ODC does have the related Socfin legal documents but they are listed under 2 local shell companies - Sethikula and Varanasi. So what I did to find the documents:

  1. I searched socfin in the ELC's profile and it brought up two results - one is Varanasi and the other Mondul Agri-Resource Co., Ltd - the later doesn't have anything to do with socfin and it's unclear why it is presented in the results.

  2. All the documents listed in the detail page for Varanasi are directly related to socfin however search in ODC law page doesn't bring up these documents. It brings up nothing.

  3. When I search for Sethikula it also brings up relevant laws and documents that directly relate to socfin but yet they are not displayed or produced as results when searched for.

There are three issues here:

  1. Don't know why search results brings up irrelevant records - can't determine what is triggering the results of records that appear to have no link whatsoever to the search term entered.

  2. Tagging - we need to be tagging these laws and records with terms such as Socfin so that they are searchable. There is no other term or metadata field where this company is listed in the related records, yet the ODC team know that they relate to Socfin as the parent company. If we asked them to tag these records they would because this is exactly what they do for the news.

  3. This makes sense because it relates to usability of the site and how researchers are using the platform to investigate and attain information on corporations and developments. As it is not always easy to uncover the myriad of shell companies and subsidiaries are listed under locally, advocacy is hindered. So whatever the the OD network can do to facilitate this research and make linkages then the more useful the data is to users.

Yet another reason for tagging using keywords.

@prustar can you repeat this exercise on https://pp.opendevelopmentcambodia.net/ and close the issue if it has now being fixed?
