I have the same questions, where also the documentations references a 1kHz signal, where is this generated ? also, a +/- 12V, ...? I would understand if the 12 volts are connected the resestance side, to drop the voltage then Ok but not really sure!
The EV simulator connects to the same place an EV would to Ground/Earth and control pilot. It does not matter if this is done at the EV plug or where the connections are made within the EVSE.
The 1000hz pilot, 12v + and - is generated by the OpenEVSE controller. The controller measures the voltage on the pilot line to set the appropriate state.

@chris1howell Thank you! I was able to create the EVSim.
Once I connect the EVSim to an actual EVCharger I detect the simulated EV, but once I press the button it detect a fault, to indicate the charging start, is that due to failure to detect the current draw as now EV is actually connecting to the charging side?
I will upload pictures of my connections, and will report back with a video shows what I am running into.
I have looked at the schematic for this simulator and that of the OpenEVSE and a few articles where people are showing how to use it. Although there is a fair bit of information, no where do they actually show how to connect the two together. Where does the PILOT signal go and where do you take the ground from?
Step 3 here shows the simulator but not where the wires are actually going. They refer to connecting to ground, but in the USA they refer to ground for what we in the UK refer to as earth.
If anyone has actually built and used this circuit I'd be grateful if you could share the connection details.
