Software provenance #84

Is some basic software provenance annotation within the scope of the metadata features? I don't mean a full fledged provenance chain but a simple entry describing the last software and its version used to produce this/these particular resource(s), for example if the file described for any reason has a propetary software behind ex. GAMS or Excel, to know which version was used to write it. Or more importantly, if the data was created using some sort of open source tool, have it associated to a specific release of said tool, let's say for example if I wanted to annotate an output from FRESNA, I would face a lot of fluctuation on the quality depending on which release/commit was used.
