Review: Geographic Region #17

Review definitions of the class Geographic Region and its subclasses:

Are classes missing?

l-emele commented 6 years ago

I think there is a geograpic region missing between federal state level and city level. Something like "Landkreis" in Germany and "Département" in France. Maybe "district" is a good generic term for those regions.

Secondly, "Continent" could be defined more generic as:

"WorldRegion" might be a better definition.

What about "Kommunen" and "Gemeinden"?

klarareder commented 6 years ago

Waht about non-govermental regions? Like Köppen Climate Regions? Is that used in energy szenarios?

https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/NUTS#Deutschland → Hauptartikel: NUTS-Regionen Deutschlands (NUTS:DE)

What about a single point, i.e. coordinate?

l-emele commented 6 years ago

Regarding continents: I'd prefer the seven continents definition (Africa, Asia, Europe, North America, South America, Antarctica, Australia/Oceania).

For MENA, CIS and areas like that: Something like WorldRegion or SocioEconomicRegion. Also the European Union would fit to that.

If you are looking for a standardised ontology that covers regions, countries and their parts, you may want to have a look at https://www.omg.org/spec/LCC/1.0/ https://www.omg.org/spec/LCC/1.0/

The specification itself is https://www.omg.org/spec/LCC/1.0/PDF https://www.omg.org/spec/LCC/1.0/PDF

By “standardized” I mean that the ontology is issued by the Object Management Group. This standard builds on ISO 639 and basically formalises it. Best Fabian

Thanks. We'll have a look, not sure yet, whether standardised is what fits the energy context best.

I think this can be closed. We can reopen if necessary.
