Description of the issue

As discussed today bilaterally with @han-f : We want to include further CRF sector individuals that we can cover the whole MMR table 1 in with member states provide their greenhouse gas projections (= scenarios) to the European Union.

Ideas of solution

If you already have ideas for the solution describe them here

For the definition of these sector individuals I propose the same approach as in PR #523: Copy & paste from the IPCC guidelines. That should work for the vast majority of the listed sectors but might be tricky for everything below memo items. But these are least priority an can be discussed case by case.

For Bunkers see #928

l-emele commented 2 years ago

I can add those.

l-emele commented 2 years ago

I think we should also define a separate MMR sector division. Something like The MMR sector division is a sector division defined in annex ###. It uses CRF sectors (IPCC 2006) and adds further sectors.

Then we could also describe things like 2.A. of which other non cement production which are specific to the MMR.

han-f commented 2 years ago

Yes, I think this is a good idea: The MMR sector division is a sector division defined in Annex XXV, Table 1a of Commission Implementing Regulation (EU) 2020/1208. It uses CRF sectors (IPCC 2006) and adds further sectors.

Does the link I added work, meaning it jumps to Annex XXV when clicked?

l-emele commented 2 years ago

No, that kind of masked linking does not work, but we can add the link e.g. as editor note.

In the table, you list: 1.A.5. Other. However, that is already included as CRF sector (IPCC 2006): fuel combustion - other. It is labelled that way as almost every top level sector (CRF 2, 3, ...) has it own other sector and there also exists a top level other, which is CRF sector (IPCC 2006): other (CRF 6).

l-emele commented 2 years ago

PR #941 will solve most of the missing sectors from the tables.

For Total excluding LULUCF, Total including LULUCF, International bunkers and IB.Aviation see #928.

This leaves for this issue: Memo items, CO2 emissions from biomass, CO2 captured and Indirect CO2.

The concept of a memo item cannot be found in the IPCC guidelines.

l-emele commented 2 years ago

I don't think that memo items is a sector as the sum of all emissions in the memo items does not give a useful quantity (except of the sum of all emissions that were excluded). I see memo item itself more as a property of some sectors: the property of being excluded or treated differently or something like that.

@stap-m : Any suggestions to define such a property?

l-emele commented 2 years ago

Proposals for the missing memo items sector individuals:

Regarding memo item: What about defining it as a quality?

@han-f @stap-m : What do you think of these proposals, especially of the proposal for memo item?

l-emele commented 2 years ago

@han-f @stap-m : Any comments on my last proposals?

han-f commented 2 years ago

Apologies for replying so late. I think they all read good, thank you.

stap-m commented 2 years ago

I am sorry, I somehow missed that issue, although you mentioned me several times.

quality is a specifically dependent continuant and the bearer should be an independent continuant. sector is a generically dependent continuant though.

My first idea is to make memo item an information content entity instead that is about some sector?!

l-emele commented 2 years ago

Defining memo item as A memo item is an information content entity about a sector that describes that the sector is excluded from some kind of total and only reported to provide further information (memo). with the axiom 'memo item' 'is about' some 'sector' would be only half of the solution.

We would additionally need an inverse relation of is about to connect some sector individuals to memo item. Something like has information content entity: A relation that relates an entity to an information artifact. with the range information content entity. This would then be a generalised version and thus a parent of has quantity value (A relation between an entity and a quantity value.).

Then we could replace the axiom 'has quality' some 'memo item' of the memo items individuals with 'has information contenty entity' some 'memo item'.

stap-m commented 2 years ago

Why not create a "sibling relation" to has quantity value, which is has memo item that only hold for sectors and memo items? I think is about doesn't necessarily have to have only one inverse relation.

l-emele commented 2 years ago

That is a good idea with adding a special relation for that. However, I would like to add the has information content entity as parent for both these relations.

l-emele commented 2 years ago

Something seemingly unrelated, but related because we touch the properties: has global warming potential should be a subproperty of has quantity value and a sub-subproperty of has information content entity as global warming potential is a subclass of quantity value and a sub-subclass of information content entity.

So in the end that part of the cleaned up properties structure will look like this:

stap-m commented 2 years ago

From my perspective you can include this into PR #967

l-emele commented 2 years ago

That was my intentions. I just wanted to do it transparently and this is why I wrote it at all. 😉
