So @mtuchi has raised a couple of great issues with the state operator and I've raised #660

It's left me worried that $ is a bit too hard to understand until 660 is addressed, so I think I'm going to leave it in stealth mode for now. That means pausing on the docs and downgrading some of the changes to patches.
