2 years ago NB to editors: there are several impacted files and other issues submitted pertaining to the same files so caution must be used in overwriting changes or creating conflicts in revisions.

2 years ago @agsper Thank you for the Septuagint issues. Unfortunately no read-throughs of most texts were done, so many of these data capture issues will not be spotted or resolved in the normal text entry process. Without a thorough read through, missing words will generally be hard to spot or correct as we do not have the personnel to do this kind of careful reading. There were some bugs with the early OCR software that resulted in the end of sections going missing that I have seen in other texts from this same time frame. We do not have any additional help in making corrections at this time so I cannot say when these issues will be addressed. As they span entire sets of texts, and it is unusual to have one issue for multiple works, we will have to see if we can have a volunteer or student work on the texts or if the issue should be subdivided at some point in the future. It would not be possible at this phase to do any external difference comparisons with another file due to the markup work involved. If the quality is suspect, it's possible we would want to start over.

2 years ago I am currently working on the missing Ecclesiastes including the footnotes. Although I am working within my own html constraints, the output from my work would be adaptable, perhaps, in your system as I am using some of the same xml tags or uniform versions thereof.

2 years ago @agsper I think perhaps the extent and volume of the above reports would warrant a more holistic approach such as ultimately reentering the texts. (The app crit also presents another challenge as we generally do not capture this. When it was captured in the earlier workflow, it's not usually corrected or formatted).
A large and extensive report that spans a whole set of works (rather than one work per report) is going to be challenging to follow comprehensively and carefully, particularly where omitted passages are included and there is just so much that drops out entirely.
In the long term, it would be easiest for our workflow if the corrections were done in the current file(s) rather than within a different format such as the issues here and elsewhere. The amount of editing and cross checking involved for the entire LXX may not be feasible given the volume of errors I see documented here.
With such a large and diverse amount of problems across a whole set of files, one can otherwise easily spend a lot of time just trying to locate a given passage and if the file is badly captured, it is easy to go in circles and lose one's place.
In the future, I would suggest a concise format such as the text ID, the reference, and the wrong word(s) - right word(s) (or in the case of missing lines, just the numeration of the missing passages). I would not recommend retyping large missing sections in issues. We have some suggestions in the Perseus repositories (https://github.com/PerseusDL/canonical-greekLit/wiki/Submit-a-correction-by-opening-an-issue-in-GitHub) but those are not in this particular wiki as yet.

2 years ago I have attached an Ecclesiastes xml file which, I believe, would work pretty much as is when supplemented by appropriate linking . I assigned it a tlg number of 030 since the repository seems to have left that folder unused. I think the xml tags should be the same as used in Proverbs. I have checked the text and corrected it against Swete vol. 2 1907 edition. The apparatus has been checked and corrected, but no special tagging. This should make the Swete LXX collection complete.
I have a thought about a relatively quicker way to screen for errors in the other xml files: since most of the missing text occurs at the end of a line, one could scan the first word (or couple words) of each line down the xml file in an xml editor program and compare with Swete. This would still take a fair amount of time, but would probably find problems of missing lines or first words relatively quickly.

In any case, after our meeting yesterday the project leads wanted to revisit replacing this edition of the LXX with better OCR data capture and versification and the newer software methods we have now rather than looking for missing words or correcting the verses.
(I have not looked, but it could be we have this text elsewhere in another data set that was not finished.)

2 years ago Thanks for the message, Lisa. That sounds about right. I have been impressed with how accurate the diacritics are in the text that is present (not perfect though). A major difficulty for the apparatus is the blending of symbols and numbers and letters as well as 2 alphabets, such as ] I l 1 1° and also A1 vs Α(\u913?) and so on. There is a very accurate (not completely) CCAT LXX file http://ccat.sas.upenn.edu/gopher/text/religion/biblical/lxxmorph/ using the Rahlfs Septuagint which is probably more up-to-date, but the available apparatus is limited which is why I sought out an editable version of Swete. A run of the CCAT against the Swete files may be useful for finding missing texts. The errors in Swete at this point are so numerous that I have abandoned passing them on to you, but I nonetheless find it useful for the apparatuses, which I have partially formatted to make more easy to look through.
If you need the Ecclesiastes file I alluded to, I could upload it to Google Drive where you could download it.

2 years ago I ran a comparison of the Pentateuch in Swete vs. in Rahlf’s from CCAT and found roughly one error per verse – I think they both tend to use B for the main text so I suspect there were not alot of textual variants involved. I have, however, only done a close review of Gen 1:1-14. I probably will not continue comparing. I would be happy to send you the Word docx. of the Pentateuch comparison, if it can get through your firewall, or put it in Google Drive.

2 years ago @agsper Hi Andrew, I am making notes here in order to report to the rest of the collaborators about what I found. I did see some incorrect breathing marks, but as I was not looking for those, that is something that concerns me. I was only looking for missing words. We may be able to run a diff with another electronic version of the text, but ideally that would be the same edition as otherwise it not be worth the effort to correct. I'm presently not able to work on this due to other things that have come up but will keep my notes and other input here.
LXX Swete is missing text at the start of Deuteronomy 32:1 Προσεχε, οὐρανέ,
Gen 5:31 is missing text: ἡμέραι Λάμεχ ἑπτακόσια καὶ πεντήκοντα τρία ἔτη, καὶ ἀπέθανεν.
Gen 15:18-21 versification encoding is off. Also Εὐφμάτου should be Εὐφράτου at end of v.18. In v.19 (not encoded) ενεζαίους should be Κενεζαίους. v.21 is missing καὶ at the start, and is missing τοὺς at the end of the line after Χαναναίους καὶ. Also Εὑοίους should be Εὑαίους
Gen 16:16 has been assimilated into v.15.
Gen 36:41 at the end is missing Φινές, and v.43 should begin with ἡγεμὼν Μετοδιήλ, (not just ήλ,) and at the end there is extra text; it should end with οῦτος Ἠσαὺ πατὴρ Ἐδώμ (not: οὗτος Ἠσαὺ πατὴρ ’ δὲ Ἰακὼβ ἐν τῇ γῇ οὗς κτήσεως αὐτῶν. οῦτος Ἠσαὺ πατὴρ Ἐδώμ.)
Exo 17:12 assimilates vv. 12-16. v.12 after αἱ δὲ should add χεῖρες at the start of the next line before Μωυσῆ and on page 139 line 2-3 χεφες Μωυσῆ ἑ
γμέναι should read χεῖρες (not χεφες) and ἐστηρι- (not ἑ; making ἐστηριγμέναι). v.16 begins with ὅτι (not ἕτι).
Exo 24:12 assimilates vv. 12-18. In v.12 Swete reads ἔγραψα (not ἔγραψαν). In v.14 read Ἡ in Ἡσυχάζετε (not Ησυχάζετε). In v.15 conventionally ὄρος, (not ὄροσ,). At the end of v.18 is missing ἡμέρας before καὶ τεσσεράκοντα νύκτας.
Exo 28:38 καλύψαι (rather than κάλυψα - missing iota and altered accent) and then ἀσχημοσύνην (not συνῆν -- missing letters and altered accent). v.39 should begin with καὶ ἕξει Ἀαρὼν before αὐτὰ καὶ οἱ υἱοὶ
Exo 29:46 is assimilated into v.45. In v.46 on page 165 lines 1-2: κα B θε ὃς should be καὶ B θεὸς with tags to indicate B is in the right margin and then
before θεὸς.
Exo 35:35 has ἰαὶ before τὰ ὑφαντὰ but should read καὶ τὰ ὑφαντὰ . Also the Καὶ ἐποίησεν ἐποίησεν at the end belongs to 36:1 which should begin with Καὶ ἐποίησεν Βεσελεήλ καὶ Ἐλιὰβ rather than καὶ Ἐλιὰβ
Exo 36:8 is missing ἐποίησεν and should read: Καὶ
ἐποίησεν πᾶς σοφὸς ἐν τοῖς ἐργαζομένοις and then is marked 39:1 which should read ἁγίων, αἵ εἰσιν (missing ἁγίων,) and at the end is missing Μωυσῇ. after κύριος τῷ
Exo 38:11 begins with καὶ τοὺς (not κα τοὺς)
1 Samuel 4:22 is almost completely missing: only the last word is present (at the end of 4:21). 4:21 begins with κα but should read καὶ
1 Sam 8:22 and part of 9:1 are assimilated into 8:21. 8:22 is missing several pieces: βασίλευσον before αὐτοῖς βασιλέα and ἀποτρεχέτω before ἕκαστος (only the final omega is present) and in 9:1 υἱοῦ is missing before Ἀρὲδ and the final δυνατός. (All of these are at the left margin, a pattern noted elsewhere).
1 Sam 13:22-23 are assimilated into 13:21. In v.21 τρύγητός should read τρυγητὸς (2 diacritics changed)
1 Sam 14:52 is assimilated into 14:51. 1 Sam 18:29 is assimilated into 18:28. 1 Sam 25:44 is assimilated into 25:43.
2 Kings 14:29 is assimilated into 14:28. At the end of v.28 line 1 Ἰεροβοὰμ καὶ should be followed with πάντα and τὴν Δαμασκὸν should be preceded by ἐπέστρεψεν at the start of the line. Likewise before ταῦτα γεγραμμένα should be οὐχὶ at the start of the line. After βασιλεῦσιν at the start of the next line down should have ᾿Ισραήλ; Beginning of v.29 μήθη Ἰεροβοὰμ should read καὶ ἐκοιμήθη Ἰεροβοὰμ and μετὰ ήλ, καὶ ἐβασίλευσεν should be μετὰ βασιλέων ᾿Ισραήλ, καὶ ἐβασίλευσεν and diacritics are missing for τοῦ πατρὸς αὐτοῦ.
